Are You Drowning Your Suffering?
We are suffering…
We are going through an uprising in our country, that I believe is way overdue. Our country is really hurting right now, people are suffering, and I understand. When people suffer, sometimes they drown their feelings with alcohol. I want to check in and start a conversation about this because it’s important. What we’re going through is important, and when we use alcohol to numb ourselves or to deal with our feelings, it can lead to trouble.
I know that when I have suffered in the past, I used alcohol to alleviate my pain. And so, I’m thinking that if I did that, then maybe some of you are doing the same thing. That’s why, I feel it’s important for me to share and to be here for you if you need some support.
It’s okay to feel discomfort…
Here’s the thing, when I used to drink, many times it was to either give me courage to speak up, or to numb out so that I didn’t have to feel my feelings. I think it’s interesting that so many people, myself included-because I have felt this way at times in my life, where for some reason we buy into the notion that we’re supposed to get through life without feeling any discomfort whatsoever. And, that’s just bullshit. We are going to feel discomfort, if we are participating in our life, we are going to be uncomfortable.
We’re not going to get out of this life without feeling discomfort. It’s how we deal with the discomfort that’s key. So, we can act out with negative behavior on one end of the spectrum, or we can numb out on the other end of the spectrum. Or, if we’re willing to, we can get curious about why we’re feeling the way we’re feeling, and do some work there.
Let’s clean up your thinking about your drinking…
If you’re drinking because of what you’re thinking, we can clean that up. It’s a really good time to get curious about that. Why do you want to numb out those feelings? Why do you feel like you should? Why do you feel it’s necessary? What’s the purpose-what’s the result going to be? Are you going to be better off numbing out or having some liquid courage so that you can act out? Or will it serve you better to pause and look inside and do some work to figure out what you’re trying to avoid?
What if 2020 isn’t canceled?
What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for?
A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw –
that it finally forces us to grow.
A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us from our ignorant slumber.
A year we finally accept the need for change.
Declare change. Work for change. Become the change.
A year we finally band together, instead of
pushing each other further apart.
2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather
the most important year of them all.
Alcohol as a coping tool…
If you’re using alcohol as a coping tool to numb your feelings about everything that is happening so far this year, you are on a slippery slope. Using alcohol as a coping tool is not a good idea and it’s not going to end well for you. If you can take a look your alcohol use and do something about it before it gets completely out of hand it will be so much easier for you. Because trust me, it’s got to be easier to quit drinking when you don’t have to, than it is to quit when you’ve hit rock bottom. I hit my rock bottom and I know what that feels like, and it’s no fun.
